Dear Parents: Welcome to an exciting year at Avon Grade School. I am looking forward to having your child in my first grade class. I look forward to my year with them and you, too. Be sure to share with me any information you feel may be helpful. The following information will clear up some questions and help with class concerns: 1. Parent Conferences - I believe parent conferences are very important and plan to work closely with you throughout the year. We'll work together to help your child do his or her best in first grade. Feel free to contact me through phone, note, or e-mail whenever you would like to meet with me. 2. Clothing - Please make sure that all extra articles are labeled with names. In case of accidents, an extra set of clothes is useful. It would also be helpful to send an extra pair of gym shoes to school for them to keep in their locker. During the summer and winter, students often wear shoes to school that cannot be worn during gym class. Having extra gym shoes at school can help with this problem. 3. Health - Please advise us of any specific concerns. If your child needs to take any medicine in school, please let us know about this and send a note detailing dosage instructions. 4. Annual CELEBRATIONS - Specific details will be sent home with your child by letter for each holiday event. We will have sign-up sheets for donations and ask that one or two parents take charge and plan a few of the parties. Our birthday celebrations will be held during snack time. You may bring a special treat for your child’s birthday and you are welcome to join the celebration as well. 5. Transportation - Please clarify by note any changes about the way your child is transported to and from school. This is important information regarding the safety of your little person. Please make sure your child understands his or her mode of transportation each day. 6. Homework - Your child will have math homework almost every day. Most students will need parent help. Please encourage them to do their best work and review their assignments when complete. Please help your child with remembering to complete and return these assignments. Remember, we have grades in first grade. There will be a penalty for late or unfinished work. 7. Visitors – Please feel free to visit our classroom any time! If you would like to come in for a few minutes or a few hours you are more than welcome. 8. Snacks – I will be sending home a snack chart each month. Everyday, a student will be the “Leader of the Day” and will be in charge of many things in the classroom. They are also in charge of bringing a treat to share. There are 14 students in the class. Please check the snack chart regularly and send the snacks in your child’s backpack that morning. (Suggestions: crackers, pop-tarts, pudding, Jell-O, cookies, fruit, applesauce, brownies, yogurt) Please send spoons if your snack requires them. I do have a fridge and freezer in my classroom if something needs to stay cool. 9. Take Home Folders – Please check your child’s folder daily. Important information will be sent home often. Students are in charge of getting their own folders ready, so make sure you look through everything! I will be giving your child a “Homework Folder” that will be kept inside your child’s regular folder. Homework and other items needed to be returned to school should be sent back in the “Homework Folder.” Please sign your child’s assignment notebook each night to verify you have seen whether they have homework or not. It is their responsibility to ask you to sign it each evening. 10. Homework- Homework is mandatory this year. Students will be graded on their effort and correctness of their work. Students will receive grades in math, spelling, handwriting, reading, and language arts. Grades will also be given in the special classes of P.E., art, and music. Science and social studies will be taught, but not graded. 11. Milk/Lunch Money – Please send money in an envelope with your child periodically for milk and/or lunch. The milk is consumed during snack time. Milk/Lunch money balance reports will be sent home weekly. 12. Napkins- It has been brought to my attention that napkins were not put on the supply list this year. If anyone wants to donate napkins, that would be wonderful. This is not mandatory. 13. Box Tops- We will be collecting box tops again this year. Send them in whenever you can! As always, thank you for your continuous help and support. I am looking forward to a wonderful year! Sincerely,
