Mrs. Brahmstedt’s KINDERNEWS #2 2009-2010

1. KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION from me will be sent home on decorative or colored paper. Some notes from the
office will continue to be on white paper, so watch for them
as well.
2. LESSON ONE: THE ABCs of LIFE, a program designed by Jon Oliver to “help young people develop critical life skills for tomorrow’s world” will be used in the kindergarten this year as a method of promoting positive choices and behaviors in the classroom, on the playground, at home, and in the community. This program begins with a Pledge for Success, moves to developing Self-Control, offers Self-Control Time, promotes Self-Confidence, encourages Being Responsible and understanding that consequences are the result of what is said and done, fosters Thinking and Problem Solving, and focuses on Cooperation as the final goal. This program works well with our Olweus Anti-Bullying program, and the Second Step activities we use.

3. CHEERS AND CHEER BOXES will be used to focus on positive behaviors. When adults (or other children) observe students interacting in positive, healthy ways, by telling themselves the right thing to do, a CHEER may be given.
[Colored stars, will be used, too: Purple = Respect, Red = Self-Discipline, Yellow = Manners, & Green = Responsibility.] When a cheer is earned, the class CHEER BOX is opened and everyone really “cheers.” J Children will have personal CHEER boxes.
4. PERSONAL TOYS need to stay at home. We have many things for children to play with at school, and fear their own toys might be lost or broken. In addition, keep play make-up and perfume at home, please.
5. ART CLASSES with Mrs. Maas will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday. [“B” Fridays] Please have children wear clothes that paint, chalk, clay, etc. will wash out of easily on those days.

6. MUSIC CLASSES with Mr. Szaltis will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and every other Friday. [“A” Fridays]
7. SNACK TIME will be around 10:10 a.m. each day, due to our long mornings.

8. LIBRARY is on Thursday morning each week. Keep library books in a special place, so they remain separate from your child’s own library, and are out of the reach of younger children, please. Return dates are stamped inside.
9. P.E. CLASSES will be every afternoon this year. Wearing tennis shoes is mandatory for participation in class activities to be sure the children remain as safe as possible.
10. LUNCH will be served at 12:20 p.m. this year.
11. WHEN DRESSES are worn, SHORTS should be worn
under them.
12. ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOKS are very important. Send notes in your child’s notebook, whenever you have questions or concerns. It will be read every day.
13. INITIAL notes sent to you in your child’s notebook, so I will know you have received the information, please. Ms. Knapp and I will do the same. Thanks! J
14. FOLDERS for notebooks are very important. Your child’s papers and information sheets will be placed in the left pocket of the folder each day. Papers are usually stapled.
15. EMAIL ADDRESSES are needed for communication purposes. If you have access to email, please send your address to me in your child’s communication notebook.

Mrs. Brahmstedt
