First Grade News! #4

by Tara DeWitt

September 25, 2009

First Grade News September 4, 2009 You are assigned to the ___________________ party. I will send more information home as the time gets closer. If you are unable to volunteer for this party, please let me know as soon as possible. I apologize if you did not get your first choice; I did the best I could! • Thank you for helping your child with spelling. They did great with their first test. I use the challenge words as extra credit if other words are missed on the test. During the second semester, they are not used as extra credit; they are expected to know them. But for now, extra credit helps out a bit at the beginning.  • We have started to put a few names in the “bad day book.”  It was mostly for talking, not working, and arguing. Remind your child that we are at school to learn! The good thing I have found with the “bad day book” is that when a child makes a poor choice and has to sign their name, they usually don’t make that choice again. It is a good reminder for them to make good choices. • Next week’s spelling test will be on Monday, September 14 due to the 4-day week. • Thank you all for communicating with me. I have received several notes and emails with questions and concerns. Please always feel free to contact me. We need to work together! • tdewitt@avonschools.us • Thank you for helping with math homework. The kids seem to be getting into a nice routine. I can tell that they are being supported at home. You have also been doing a great job helping them read 10 minutes (or more!) in the evening. Keep it up. Reading is a habit that starts young! Math and reading will be homework almost every night. • Next week, we will start just a bit of spelling homework. This week, I had the students write each spelling word 3 times. Some of them had a hard time organizing this. This will be homework next week. It will be written in their assignment notebook. • We will start our reading groups next week, as well as centers. If center work does not get done at school, it becomes homework on Friday. Remind your child to stay focused!  As always, thanks for your help and support, Ms. DeWitt
