First Grade News #4 9-17-09 Math- We have been learning about shapes and position words. For example, we have been learning “most, least, first, middle, and last.” We have even had our first math test! There will be written math tests this year. They are given every 5-10 lessons. As always, thank you for helping your child with their homework every night. You are building a foundation for doing homework that will be carried throughout the years. Reading- We learned how to do a “Top 10” activity. This will be an activity done frequently throughout the year. They will make a top 10 list of favorites. For example, this week we made a list of “top ten things that are green.” This task is sometimes difficult, but everyone is doing well. Spelling- Thank you for helping your child study for the spelling tests. I am impressed with the growth that is made from Monday to Friday! D.O.L.- Daily Oral Language is done first thing every morning. It touches on certain aspects of writing, exposing them to new and different things everyday. They are sent home on Fridays. We are collecting Box Tops again this year. Keep sending them! We have started taking A.R. tests. If your child has a library book with a sticker on the spine, it is an A.R. book. They can bring it to school and tell me they are ready to take a test. They may need to read the book more than once to comprehend the story. They will gain points with every test passed. My goal is for everyone to have at least 10 points by the end of the school year. Some children are aiming for more! Keep reading!! Library day is THURSDAY. If your child reads his/her library book before Thursday and would like to take a test, they may get a new book, even if it’s not library day! For snack days: There are 14 students in the class. As always, thanks for everything!
