Guided reading: We have begun working in reading centers and the kids love it! They each have a clear reading folder and they are responsible for keeping their reading papers in it. They are responsible for completing all of the work by each Friday. They rotate through 6 different centers and work independently! If a center is not finished by the end of reading on Friday, I send it home as homework.
Math- We have begun talking about money. We have reviewed the penny and we will continue to review money skills learned in Kindergarten. Encourage your child to count money at home. Let them count change, or let them find the money to pay for their own things at the store. Money is a difficult concept for many children, so practice at home helps! Also, we have started fractions! We have talked about “halves” so far.
Box Tops- Keep sending them in! Thank you!
As always, thank you for signing your child’s notebook and helping with homework each night. It’s fun for them to “show off” what they learned in school. Everyone is doing great with their homework and they are having fun! (If they forget to turn their homework in in the morning, they owe 5 minutes at recess. It’s part of their morning responsibilities.)
AR Books- We have started taking Accelerated Reader tests. Your child should be able to recognize if their book is an AR book. If, for example, he/she gets the book on Thursday, and has it read by Monday, feel free to bring it back to school and we will take an AR test and get a new library book to take home. I do not mind sending them to the library on non-library days if it means they are reading! It is a goal of mine to see each child reach 10 points by the end of the school year. Several children already have, or are very close, to 1 point already so we are on the right track!
If you have any questions… feel free to contact me! I’m always here to help.
As always, thanks for your help and support,
Ms. DeWitt
