Kindernews #9: Guided Reading Centers, Canned Food Drive, Christmas Gifts,
Christmas Concert, T-Buck Store, & Squiggle Pages

1) We have begun training for Guided Reading Centers. Some pages completed during our Guided Reading time will have “LC” [Literacy Center] written in the upper right hand corner to indicate your child worked on this somewhat independently, during the time other children were working at a listening center, reading with the teacher, practicing skills with an assistant, etc.

2) Thank you to those who have sent food for the Canned Food Drive. It will end on December 11, 2009. It is my understanding the food will go to needy families in our community.

3) Again this year, there will be a student gift exchange at the Christmas party on December 18th. Gifts should range in price from $3.00 to $5.00. Keep gifts within that price range, please. [This is an F.Y.I. in case you wish to go shopping over the Thanksgiving break.]

4) The PreK-5th Winter Concert will be on December 7th at 7:00 PM. More information will be sent at a later date.

5) T-Bucks have been being earned since November 9th. December 3rd will be the first time students will go shopping in the T-Buck store. Thanks in advance to PTA members who will be helping with this first shopping day. Reminder: The children who have been making the most good choices will have earned the most T-Bucks. Therefore, they will be able to purchase a larger quantity of items, or the more expensive items. Encourage your child to keep making good choices. Thanks.

6) “Squiggle Pages” are part of the Guided Reading Centers time. Your child is given a sheet of white paper with a black “squiggle” mark on it. It is the job of the child to decide how to create a picture from the “squiggle.” He/She then narrates a sentence to describe what was created. Later, the children will be asked to write sentences of their own to tell a story about their creation.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Mrs. B.
